What is your current Job Title or Role?
Head of Design Technology
What advice would you have for young women who are interested in a STEM career or job?
Gain as much experience as you can early on and don't allow gender stereotypes to close doors for you. Be brave!
How did you get to where you are today?
I studied for a degree in Product Design at Plymouth university. After graduating i then completed a PGCE in Design Technology to allow me to teach the subject. I have always been interested and passionate about design and how modern technology along with the application of science can allow us to produce creative solutions to problems. Education has also been a passion and so a career which combines the two was an obvious choice
What do you do on a daily basis in your work?
The majority of my role involves teaching Design Technology to students aged 11-18. I also run the department which involves a lot of admin, management skills, analyzing data and overseeing the progress of design students. I get to teach students about a variety of topics such as sustainability, design history, Maths, materials and properties, practical skills, CAD/CAM and so much more.
Who or what inspired you to get into STEM?
From a young age i have always been interested in Science and Technology. I love to be creative and show that science and technology does not have to be boring. I also had two excellent teachers at school. One taught me design technology and encouraged my passion for the subject. Another was an incredible history teacher who encouraged my passion for teaching. Between them i would not have gone into the role i did. They were both excellent role models and supported me with gaining experience in my career both during my education and after.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
Sharing my passion for design with students and helping them overcome problems in a safe and creative environment. Students teach me as much as i teach them and every day is different.
What do you like to do outside work?
Play and coach netball, graphic design, dog walks and raise a family.
