What is your current Job Title or Role?
Housing Maintenance Surveyor
What advice would you have for young women who are interested in a STEM career or job?
Continue to persevere regardless of gender stigma, it only helps build your character even stronger
How did you get to where you are today?
My role in the housing industry started as a lettings administrator, I often showed interest in the building maintenance aspect of the company but wasn't taken seriously. I began my role at East Devon District Council in our housing repairs admin team, and with the help of senior management here I have been able to progress to a building surveyors role in reactive repairs. They have enabled me to enrol onto a HNC in construction also.
What do you do on a daily basis in your work?
My role see's me visiting our council housing stock to establish major repairs which are required. This covers everything from the rebuilding of a damaged cob wall right through to major drainage issues and much more.
Who or what inspired you to get into STEM?
My senior manager showed me that Women can succeed within the world of construction and I aspire to follow in her footsteps.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
Working within Social Housing I have the ability to make a real impact on peoples day to day lives within their home which often leads to a positive impact on their life as a whole. I enjoy being able to help the people who need it most, at the time they most need it.
What do you like to do outside work?
I enjoy getting outside in the beautiful Devon/Somerset countryside on walks or on my bike along the canals. My partner and I often use this as a chance to escape the pressures of every day life and just enjoy our time together.
