What is your current Job Title or Role?
Technology & Ecommerce Manager
What advice would you have for young women who are interested in a STEM career or job?
Follow your passion and don't let anything get in your way! If you work hard, you will get to where you want to be, just believe in yourself.
How did you get to where you are today?
Hard work and determination! Growing up I represented Wales playing chess all over the world. Similar to the tech world, it was very male dominated, however this empowered me more to do better. (I especially enjoyed beating the arrogant boys)! Just because there's not many women in the career you are interested in doesn't mean there shouldn't be. There may be tough times ahead, but trust in your gut and go for what YOU want! I studied Digital Arts & Technology at university, and once again this was a male dominated area. There was a ratio of about 5 boys to every girl on the course. At first they did think I was 'just a girl', but I proved them wrong with my grades and became top of the class! Not only did I gain their friendship, but their respect. To get to where I am today it was a bumpy journey, sadly I did have to prove my skills/ability to many people. However, slowly but surely, if every women does this, then eventually no women will need to prove themselves again!
What do you do on a daily basis in your work?
Break technological boundaries. With the business I work for (NeedToLive) we are taking complex technical platforms to the next level. For instance, we are using Shopify for our ecommerce platform, however even Shopify are saying to me "No one has done this before". I communicate with tech partners all over the world discussing technical projects and implementations. I also manage a small in-house team (currently 1 employee but soon to be 2!), so I look after them and their workloads. Not only communication, but I also help with the implementation of technical projects which involves coding, design and project management. Basically, I do a lot, but I love it! 🙂
Who or what inspired you to get into STEM?
My parents! My dad has always been technical, and mum has a creative side; so I became a creative technical person! They always wanted me to enjoy whatever career I pursued, they always supported me and they always believed in me.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
The variety, excitement and job satisfaction. Technology doesn't always got to plan, but when it does , it feels awesome! When I create or code something, and other people compliment it - I get a real pride in my work, and satisfaction that I MADE THAT! Also with tech it's always improving, so there's always things to learn, and I love learning as much as I can!
What do you like to do outside work?
More work! When you enjoy your job it doesn't feel like work. I also like exploring new places, binge watching Netflix series and gaming.
