What is your current Job Title or Role?
ICB Bookkeeper/Director
What advice would you have for young women who are interested in a STEM career or job?
Believe in yourself. Dream big and don’t let the negative opinions of others get in the way of working towards your goals and aspirations. Just do it and become an inspiration to other women in business.
How did you get to where you are today?
I always knew that I wanted to make a positive difference in my career. I was good with numbers and naturally fell into bookkeeping and accounts work. However, when I had my children I wanted more flexibility than an employed position allowed. For 3 years during my late twenties I wrangled with taking the risk to start up on my own. When my first child came along I took that risk and went freelance so I could work around family life. After 11 years of ‘just’ being a self employed bookkeeper my circumstances changed and I knew I could do more to help my clients grow their businesses. In 2016 I setup Starbooks Ltd with the sole aim of not just being a bookkkeeper but a bloody good one! My company is committed to helping clients use the latest systems in technology to provide enhanced accounts and advisory services which empowers them to make better financial decisions and drive sustained growth within their business.
What do you do on a daily basis in your work?
No two work days are ever the same! Some days I will be on site at a clients processing and managing their accounts. Another day I will be managing an accounts team and reporting to the board of Directors. One day I will be training a new client on how to get the best out of their systems for financial reporting purposes. I may be involved in mentoring and training an accounts clerk. Sometimes I take a day out to concentrate on marketing strategies and our own business growth. At certain times of the year I actively get involved with our global regulatory professional body to promote other ICB Bookkeepers across the country and the world to raise awareness of the importance of our profession in business. I have also recently been elected onto the ICB Advisory Council. The purpose of the advisory council is to provide informed advice and independent support to the ICB Executive and to identify and clarify standards within the profession.
Who or what inspired you to get into STEM?
Having an open mind, a motivated and driven nature to succeed is essential in STEM. This is me to a T!
What do you enjoy most about your role?
The variety of the work I do with amazing businesses in Plymouth. Every business is different from their operational processes to their visions and plans for growth. I like to think that my understanding of their business by the interpretation of their accounts and our collaborative work ethic is what drives their and our success.
What do you like to do outside work?
I’m a big fan of Rockfit! I also enjoy long coastal and forest walks with my family and meeting interesting and inspirational people.
