What is your current Job Title or Role?
Director.
What advice would you have for young women who are interested in a STEM career or job?
Go for it! Don't be put off by any negative input from anyone. The training can be hard work, but the opportunities to learn a lot, have a lot of fun, and find a job you really enjoy are enormous..
How did you get to where you are today?
Staring with a pure maths degree, I spent a number of years at oxford University, and CERN (the international physics laboratory in Geneva). Then worked in a number of companies in a variety of sectors as engineering consultant, manager and then director. I've always been opportunistic and never planned my career - but new exciting opportunities always seemed to present themselves.
What do you do on a daily basis in your work?
A variety of things - too many to list! But they include managing staff, setting business strategy, advising on new technology to improve business processes, interviewing people (on behalf of the IET) for CEng status and reviewing applications for fellowship of the IET, and much more.
Who or what inspired you to get into STEM?
Feedback that said I should do something more feminine and that maths/software engineering would be too difficult!
What do you enjoy most about your role?
The variety and the interesting people I meet. Also the opportunity to learn about new technologies.
What do you like to do outside work?
Walking, cooking, reading and meeting close friends (a typical response from a natural introvert!)
