What is your current Job Title or Role?
Managing Director
What advice would you have for young women who are interested in a STEM career or job?
A STEM career will allow you to shine and reach as high as your ambitions will allow. There are so many opportunities in all kinds of businesses and doing well in these subjects and career fields simply demonstrates to a prospective employer that you have an inquisitive mind, can problem solve and adapt to a changing world. Why wouldn't you follow a path into STEM?
How did you get to where you are today?
I found STEM subjects much more enjoyable than all other subjects, as you could apply knowledge and calculate answers rather than learning facts parrot fashion. I achieved good grades in Maths, Physics and Chemistry A Levels and went on to complete a degree in Civil Engineering from Bristol University. From there I walked into a job for the Highways Department for our County Council. After 4 years gaining some amazing experience I was invited to join the family engineering business where I now run a team of over 50 guys (mostly), producing sheet metal components for various industries.
What do you do on a daily basis in your work?
As a Managing Director I have a lot of responsibility, ensuring that we operate a safe, secure and financially sound business. Simply put I ensure my senior team are doing their jobs and I must keep the money flowing in and out. This involves meeting regularly with our customers, researching new technology and machinery that could make us more productive and ensuring our whole team in empowered to do a great job.
Who or what inspired you to get into STEM?
I guess I always had problem solving and STEM in my genes, but I did get some inspiration from college, with posters of oil platforms around me and the occasional team building event. I recall a particular challenge building a long spanning bridge out of wood and lollipop sticks. We won of course!
What do you enjoy most about your role?
My day is incredibly varied, challenging, and extremely rewarding. I get to work with some fantastic people and I thrive on watching them grow and develop their skills and careers.
What do you like to do outside work?
I like to play hard too! I have a young family that keep me on my toes and if and when I find some time for myself I enjoying playing golf, skiing and scuba diving.
