What advice would you have for young women who are interested in a STEM career or job?
STEM careers are never easy, but they’re always so worth it! Always look for ways you can think outside the box and make yourself stand out. Find something you’re passionate about within your field and find different ways to expand your knowledge - there will always be something to learn!
How did you get to where you are today?
My A Levels in Plymouth were Biology, Chemistry, Maths and History, which led me to study Biochemistry at Swansea University in Wales. I chose Swansea because it reminded me of Plymouth! I graduated with a 2:1 and interviewed for the job I have today!
What do you do on a daily basis in your work?
I work in Clinical Trials for new pharmaceuticals! Essentially I look at subjects on the trials and whether they have any side effects or reactions to the trial drugs. I then have to work with medical professionals who decide the severity of the side effect. It’s then my job to record and process all cases and report them to various Regulatory Authorities and Ethics Committees worldwide. It feels great to see new drugs helping people with serious diseases and being involved in the process that could result in these new drugs being available to more and more people.
Who or what inspired you to get into STEM?
I’ve always had an interest in science and maths, particularly Biology and Chemistry. My teachers growing up in Plymouth were a huge inspiration for me and always encouraged me to expand my scientific knowledge. I was constantly offered new opportunities to show and enhance my skills which have really helped me throughout my life so far.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I love the environment I work in and I love feeling like I’m making a difference in the scientific world. My scientific knowledge has allowed me to help people both directly and indirectly, mainly in my role of helping new drugs and treatments that are much safer than current treatments, to be marketed and available to as many people as possible.
What do you like to do outside work?
My current goal is to visit all 300+ castles in Wales and I love visiting beaches/coastal walks. I’ve always loved music so any opportunity I get to participate in music or watch it live I always take!
