What is your current Job Title or Role?
Schools Officer
What advice would you have for young women who are interested in a STEM career or job?
To always pursue their interests, whatever they are. Make sure you pick subjects that are relevant to your interests in school and always make sure you have fun doing what you do!
How did you get to where you are today?
I decided quite late to go into marine biology and didn't necessarily do well enough in school to do this. I then made sure to try really hard in university on a foundation course. This led me to a degree in marine biology. After this I started volunteering at the National Marine Aquarium where eventually I got a job. I now teach school children all about their school topics as well as the sea and how the oceans are so important to us.
What do you do on a daily basis in your work?
On a daily basis, I provide sessions to school groups based on the curriculum but making it exciting with marine environments and animals!
Who or what inspired you to get into STEM?
I always loved the sea and sea creatures but only decided to make it my career as I was choosing a university place. That made it harder because I hadn't chosen the right subjects and hadn't focused on it enough. STEM is in everything we do and it is good to think about choosing them early on in school.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I like seeing children inspired and excited to learn about something I'm also interested in. It's great to see them learning and enjoying it.
What do you like to do outside work?
I like to SCUBA dive, run, hike on Dartmoor and travel.
