What advice would you have for young women who are interested in a STEM career or job?
Value yourself. Have confidence in yourself and your abilities - you can succeed. Take on roles that will stretch you. Take every opportunity that comes your way. Be interested. Keep listening and never stop learning.
How did you get to where you are today?
I was always interested in Maths at school - I found it "easy". I carried on this interest into my degree course at Plymouth in Statistics, combined with Computing and Operational Research. I remember speaking to the careers adviser who suggested I teach Maths or become an accountant - this drove me to find another path for my skills and I landed my first role carrying out Supply Chain forecasting for a Computer Networking Company. After 10 years in the business I joined KPMG as a Management Consultant and within the net decade I had set-up my own Management Consultancy delivering savings to Public Sector bodies across the UK. That was 12 years ago - I continue to grow with every assignment and commit to transferring my skills and knowledge to the client.
What do you do on a daily basis in your work?
Management Consultancy, development of Economic Case Options Models and Procurement Evaluation Models. Both of these require me to work with the client to develop the options and the criteria to be used to determine the option that delivers the most value for money.
Who or what inspired you to get into STEM?
Maths teacher at Primary school that taught me Long Division! Working with a small Computer Networking company that was at the forefront of secure computer networking. When I joined the company was being run from a barn in Buckinghamshire and grew to be a $100 million dollar global player.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
Passing on my knowledge and skills to the customer and knowing that I have contributed to Public sector bodies making informed decisions on how they spend our taxes.
What do you like to do outside work?
Golf, Cycling, Long Distance Walking, Wine Tasting
