What is your current Job Title or Role?
What advice would you have for young women who are interested in a STEM career or job?
Work hard. Surround yourself with people who inspire you, and don't be put off by anyone or anything. I was told doing a masters whilst working full time was "insanity" by one boss - I ended up graduating with a distinction at the top of my class... Prove them wrong!
How did you get to where you are today?
I left school at 16 not sure about what I wanted to do. I took a job with a local sign company as I'd always had a passion for design. I worked in the industry for a year and undertook a Diploma in Design and Innovation with the OU whilst I was working. The course gave me a great insight into the design industry and gave me more direction as to where I wanted my career to go. After being made redundant from a sign writers, I decided to complete a Professional Diploma in Marketing with the Chartered Institute of Marketing, as I was keen to learn more about design and marketing. After 4 months working on this I became an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and started working for a company manufacturing aluminium composite sheeting. After a few years, I made my way back to Plymouth and started working for a manufacturing company in Ivybridge where I initially became part of the Product Design team as a Design Engineer. I was trained on 3D Design software and designed product displays for some of the largest brands in the world. I was lucky enough to complete a Masters Degree in Product Design in 2016 at Plymouth University with the support of my employers, I studied in my spare time whilst working full time. I'm now the Creative Manager for the business.
What do you do on a daily basis in your work?
3D Product Design, product photography, graphic design, web design, content management, new product development, marketing activities
Who or what inspired you to get into STEM?
My interest in design has always made me question how things work and what problem their function solves - design makes you question everything and I love problem solving.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I love the variety of my role. Every day is different and I have the opportunity to use a broad range of skills and am always learning something new. It's also incredibly satisfying to see a product go from a conceptual design right through to a production rollout, and it's always fun spotting something you've designed whilst out and about!
What do you like to do outside work?
I love the outdoors and play trumpet / cornet for local bands.
