What is your current Job Title or Role?
Graduate Civil Engineer
What advice would you have for young women who are interested in a STEM career or job?
Nothing is impossible! If you love something in STEM then you should go for it. A career in STEM is like no other, offering so many opportunities in such a range of areas. The best thing, is you will never stop learning or experiencing new things which make a job in STEM an exciting place to be.
How did you get to where you are today?
I came into Engineering in a bit of a different way; however I have always been involved in STEM. My bachelor’s degree was in Mathematics and it was through that degree and the mechanics modules I completed that led me into a masters in Civil Engineering. I then spent two and half years teaching Mathematics at secondary school. My time as a teacher was a great way to utilise my Maths degree and also explore the promotion of the STEM subjects. Through my background in Engineering I was able to incorporate real world applications to my lessons. I really enjoyed my time teaching however I knew my passion was in Engineering and therefore I accepted a role as a Graduate Civil Engineer and it was the best decision.
What do you do on a daily basis in your work?
Every day is different! A big part of my role is to adapt to each day as it comes. Some days I will be sat at my computer writing reports and others I might be in my overalls getting my hands dirty, either way I get to use my mind in many different ways. I am also still heavily involved in STEM in my role as an Engineer as I am a STEM coordinator. For this I liaise with local schools, help organise events and continue to promote the STEM subjects.
Who or what inspired you to get into STEM?
I have always loved maths and solving problems. These are two things I found great satisfaction in from a young age. Both my parents were very encouraging of me to pursue the subjects I loved at school and therefore I naturally gravitated to mathematics.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I love that every day is different and that I am able to apply myself to things I am passionate about.
What do you like to do outside work?
I love being in the great outdoors and spend a lot of time heading to the moors for some hiking. I also enjoy climbing, cycling, kayaking and dance.
