What advice would you have for young women who are interested in a STEM career or job?
Pursue the subjects that you enjoy and try to seek out opportunities available to find out if it interests you as there are so many career STEM choices to consider. Don't be afraid that what you decide now will be what you do forever. We learn and adapt all the time.
How did you get to where you are today?
Having my daughter at a younger age was my motivation and challenge to do well in my career. This changed my thinking about what I wanted to do and I reconsidered. I enjoyed problem solving, Investigating and analytical thinking so enrolling in Forensic science was perfect and really enjoyable. On completion of both a BTEC NC and a Foundation Degree in Forensic Science I wanted to remain in the locality so I commenced a role at a Microbiology Food testing lab and remained for three years before deciding to further my studies. I left to join the second year of the Applied Chemistry Degree at Plymouth University whilst also working at Pizza Hut! After Graduation I immediately started working for a local company who specialise in complex and critical engineering services. I joined their Graduate scheme as a Trainee Health Physicist and this lead on to my current role.
What do you do on a daily basis in your work?
I work within the Project Management Office supporting projects to assure the safe upkeep and maintenance. Tasks include assisting in the management of key project and zone issues, support project planning and support activities with my team, liaising with production and supporting functions to process original scope, emergent and additional work in accordance with the projects schedule.
Who or what inspired you to get into STEM?
My daughter; At school it was something that didn't cross my mind but after making that choice at college it suited me perfectly and has ever since.
