What is your current Job Title or Role?
Apprentice Naval Architect
What advice would you have for young women who are interested in a STEM career or job?
Just go for it! I think a lot of women can overthink situations and talk themselves out of a really good opportunity through fear of the industry being predominantly male populated.
How did you get to where you are today?
I had no intention of going into STEM when I left school after completing my A-levels, I instead went to university to complete a Physical Education degree. I left University completely uninspired with a degree in a subject I didn’t know how to utilise. After working in retail for several years, I knew there was more to life than serving customers. I bought a house with my now Wife which needed more than a little work. Renovations allowed me to see a project from start to finish sparking an interest in engineering I never knew I had. After doing some research into the potential jobs within the engineering industry I waited for the right application opportunity to arise. It was this extensive research and transferable life skills gained previously which set me in good stead for my current career path.
What do you do on a daily basis in your work?
My day to day workload can vary greatly, from boarding vessels to conduct surveys, office based CAD and testing physical systems and components.
Who or what inspired you to get into STEM?
Buying and renovating our first home.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
As an apprentice I get the opportunity to experience and sample various job roles within my place of work. I am also undertaking a Foundation Degree which allows me to gain the academic foundations helping me build on my practical career.
What do you like to do outside work?
I enjoy socialising, spending time outdoors and travelling.
