What is your current Job Title or Role?
Senior Quantity Surveyor
What advice would you have for young women who are interested in a STEM career or job?
Go for it! Get as much work experience as you can to narrow down your interests and give yourself the best possible chance of a fulfilling future career! The range of careers available in the STEM field is vast! I work in the Construction Industry which used to be seen as a Male environment however that is changing quickly!
How did you get to where you are today?
By chance! I left my A Levels un-inspired and my Mum recommended a Job as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor as she knew it would suit my Maths skills whilst also providing me a good challenge! I studied in my own time attending College and completing a distance learning Degree before going on to become Chartered with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. It was a long and sometimes difficult road however I am so glad I took this path as I am now in a Career that continually challenges and interests me.
What do you do on a daily basis in your work?
My work week is generally very varied as I am always working on a number of different projects at any one time. I split my time between the office and various Construction Sites, producing cost plans, attending meetings, monitoring progress and assessing the value of completed works. As a Quantity Surveyor I deal with the financial and legal side of Construction working closely with a Client right from the inception of a project all the way through to completion.
Who or what inspired you to get into STEM?
As a child I was always interested in Maths and my Mother's encouragement to apply for the role cemented the belief that I could be successful in the Construction Industry. In my first role I had a Mentor who was an advocate of Women in Construction and I have been lucky to find that level of support throughout my career.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I enjoy the variety that comes with my Role and I have worked on some fascinating high profile projects including The Box, Plymouth and the new footbridge at Tintagel. I love seeing a project progress right from the early concept drawings, through the Construction phase, ending up with a happy Client when the project is finally complete!
What do you like to do outside work?
I like to spend time in the fresh air, walking around Dartmoor and the Tamar Valley or visiting my family on their beautiful farm on the edge of Snowdonia in Wales. I hope to pass that enthusiasm for the great outdoors on to my one year old Daughter so she is often strapped into her baby carrier on our country walks!
