What is your current Job Title or Role?
Associate Architect
What advice would you have for young women who are interested in a STEM career or job?
A career in a STEM related industry is bound to be challenging and interesting, worthwhile and enormously satisfying... whatever is it! There are so many!
How did you get to where you are today?
With a lot of determination, perseverance and hard work!
What do you do on a daily basis in your work?
Mainly communication and co-ordination with all members of the design team, whether the client/end user for a building project, the professional design team such as engineers and cost consultants, or the contractor who is building the project!
Who or what inspired you to get into STEM?
I was always creative and artistic from the start, and we moved house a lot when I was young with my parents undertaking quite radical house alterations which opened my mind to change and improvement possibilities. Then we met an architect friend who had an office at home, complete with an old fashioned drawing board, who was building an extension on his house at the time, and I remember the 'wow' feeling experienced as I stepped up into the new high ceilinged space! I was only 8... and the rest is history! That set me off on my course to follow the appropriate subjects at school to study Architecture at University and I have been chartered for 16 years now... can't believe I'm that old!
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I love the creativity of being an Architect - listening to what the client wants or needs, looking at the constraints and opportunities of the site, and producing the ideas which will (hopefully!) flourish into an appropriate response in built form that everyone will enthuse about when the project is complete and the end user is enjoying their building!
What do you like to do outside work?
Outside work I like to spend time with my family, coastal walking, going to the beach, gig rowing, swimming, cooking, enjoying good food or good music with friends or family, camping, festivals, cinema and theatre, and worldwide travel! Life is all about experiences and not to be wasted!
