What is your current Job Title or Role?
Architectural Technologist
What advice would you have for young women who are interested in a STEM career or job?
You should do whatever it is you want to do and most importantly whatever it is you enjoy!! You should never not go for a career because of your gender.
How did you get to where you are today?
My dad owned his own construction company so I was brought up always having knowledge about the industry and regularly seeing Architects drawings around the house. We had several extensions to our house build by my dad that I used to get involved in at weekends as I was always interested to see how buildings were put together. When I was 15 I opted to study graphic design at school purely by luck and ended up loving it. This led me to consider the different design roles out there. I initially wanted to be an Architect and hadn't even really heard of the Architectural Technologist role. It was only when selecting Universities I came across the Architectural Technology course and quickly realised that this more detailed technical drawing style was much more for me than the Architecture course and much more in line with the elements I had been interested in when helping my dad. I then followed this interest and studied Ba(Hons) Architectural Technology and the Environment at Plymouth University. After graduating I found myself a brilliant role as an Architectural Technologist at a local Plymouth firm and have never looked back.
What do you do on a daily basis in your work?
My role can vary day to day. One day I can be drawing up a technical construction pack and the next day I can be on site inspecting works undertaken by the contractor and ensuring they are inline with my drawings. My role differs from the Architects role as I will generally be involved in the later stages of a project and helping deliver it on site.
Who or what inspired you to get into STEM?
I suppose you could say my Dad inspired me but really I just followed what I enjoyed and was always encouraged to do so.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
The people I meet. I meet such a range of people within the construction industry all from different backgrounds with a different point of view on a scenario. I think this helps make our projects more diverse and help cater for a wider range of people. But some days I enjoy just being in my own little world drawing up a design.
What do you like to do outside work?
In the summer I enjoy cycling and love going on long coastal walks. I have recently dabbled in a bit of surfing and climbing. Mostly I enjoy spending time with friends and family.
