Academy Manager of Maths City College Plymouth
What advice would you have for young women who are interested in a STEM career or job?
Never let anyone say you're too young, too inexperienced or not very good at Maths! Maths is a skill that can be learnt and developed with practice and patience.
How did you get to where you are today?
I started my teaching career in Modern Languages but soon realised that upskilling young people with maths skills was what I was passionate about. They really do open doors to everything.
What do you do on a daily basis in your work?
Half the time I am teaching Further Education students the maths they need to pass their GCSE and open up career opportunities. The rest of the time I am thinking up new ways to get young people excited about Maths.
Who or what inspired you to get into STEM?
My sister is an Engineer so has always been fighting the cause for women in STEM roles and made me realise that I had an important part to play by helping women at the very start of their maths journey.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
Seeing people overcome their fears and preconceptions around maths.
What do you like to do outside work?
Catching up with friends and family here, there and everywhere!
