What is your current Job Title or Role?
What advice would you have for young women who are interested in a STEM career or job?
If you wish to pursue a career in STEM or STEAM be prepared to have a world of fun achieving your goals whilst being challenged and pushed on pretty much a daily basis. Careers in these fields will never be described as being dull, that's for sure!
How did you get to where you are today?
I was always drawn to the more creative and art related subjects whilst at school, but I also wanted a career in a profession more substantial than just an art related subject; something that would offer me an opportunity to be challenged and be creative simultaneously, whilst utilising my inherent ability for logic and fascination for the sciences. When my closest friend at school said she was thinking about becoming an architect it was a lightbulb moment! This was probably the best decision I ever made as a teen!
What do you do on a daily basis in your work?
The role of the architect can be quite varied. My daily tasks as usually never the same, ranging from designing spaces and buildings to liaising with clients, stakeholders, planning officers, and contractors in order to see a project go from a sketch on paper to a real building on the ground. I use CAD and graphic related software to bring sketch designs to life, as well as 'standard' software (like word/ excel etc) to compile reports and schedules.
Who or what inspired you to get into STEM?
At school I was always good at mathematics and was fascinated by physics and geology, the latter being a subject I would have probably studied further coming from a very seismically active country (I am Greek). However, I also enjoyed drawing and painting and inherited a creative streak from my mum, who also enjoys painting. She is a source of inspiration to me, having been the first one in her family to go into higher education and always striving to achieve and educate herself further. Although her choice of career as teacher of English as a foreign language herself, is very different it is her tenacity and determination to be a good as she possibly could that ultimately inspired me to pursue my own choices. Architecture allowed me to combine my creativity with my skills in STEM subjects.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I get to directly influence the environment we live, work and play in - I strive to create better places for all. It is with a good sense of pride that I can say: that building over there? I designed that! Or, I was part of the design team that made it happen!
What do you like to do outside work?
Outside work my favourite things to do are: attending rock/ metal live music events, cooking for friends, drawing/ painting, spending time with my little girl, SCUBA and underwater photography, jewelry design and making... living life as best I can!
