What is your current Job Title or Role?
Project Demand Manager
What advice would you have for young women who are interested in a STEM career or job?
Don't ever assume that for jobs in science, Technology, Engineering or Maths that you need to be good at those subjects. My background is english, history and training and I work both in an Engineering organisation and in a Technology department!
How did you get to where you are today?
I am interested in People and that is what I do today, I help people in my business talk to people in IT. I break down the language barrier of technology and allow people who are non technical to interact and receive service from an IT organisation. I have A-levels in History, English and IT and a degree in IT and Education. I trained very nervous people in how to use computers before moving in to my current role.
What do you do on a daily basis in your work?
I now look at whether an IT project is worth doing for the business, does it pay back in a few years, do we have money in the budget for it, what is the priority against all the other requests and can we help the customer in another way, rather than a project. Talking to people is the key to all my daily activities.
Who or what inspired you to get into STEM?
My family are all engineers, they are all very logical people. I am not, Maths is not a strength and I felt this always held me back, but when I realised that it didn't matter, it didn't matter I wasn't logical, that's not where my skills are, I make people feel good about themselves. I like helping them and I have a skill in that. It means that I can achieve in a very logical/fact driven workplace because everyone needs someone to help, listen, understand and support them.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
The interaction with the people, knowing you have helped someone that day, makes me smile.
What do you like to do outside work?
I am a Mum of two small children so that takes up most of my time, if there is time to squeeze a quick run in or a quick coffee then that is a good day!
