What is your current Job Title or Role?
Head of Mathematics
What advice would you have for young women who are interested in a STEM career or job?
Don't be afraid to follow your dream! Don't listen to people who claim that STEM subjects are not for girls. STEM needs creative and innovative thinkers. "Dream, aspire, achieve.
How did you get to where you are today?
I completed my degree in Chemistry and worked in quality control. I then followed my husband to South East Asia where I lived for 4 years. My parents were both teachers and it was the last job I ever thought I would do. As my children were growing up I thought really hard about how so many children are switched off by mathematics "because it is boring". I felt that surely there could be a better approach. I decided to train as a maths teacher. Last year I became Head of Maths at Plymouth School of Creative Arts with the aim to really embrace the A in STEAM.
What do you do on a daily basis in your work?
As my background is in science rather than mathsI really try to encourage students to use mathematics in context I am currently developing a curriculum teaching maths through problem based learning. In addition I prepare students for exams and provide careers advice for their next steps.
Who or what inspired you to get into STEM?
Watching my own children learn about Maths and Science.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
Inspiring students and enabling them to have the choices to achieve their dreams
What do you like to do outside work?
Outside work I love travelling and spending time with my family.
