What is your current Job Title or Role?
Systems administrator
What advice would you have for young women who are interested in a STEM career or job?
Go for it - trust your instincts and explore the different options.
How did you get to where you are today?
At school and university I studied arts subjects - I wasn't interested in science as it was taught in school and technology was then "computer science" for boys. I encountered basic computers when I started work and my interest grew from there. I eventually starting working in ed tech where I discovered customer relationship management (CRM) systems. I became interested in how these worked, and how they could be configured, which led me to my current role as a systems administrator.
What do you do on a daily basis in your work?
As a systems administrator I maintain and develop the CRM system used by my employers. This involves making changes and upgrades to the system, troubleshooting problems and finding solutions to changes requested by our staff. I also provide training to our staff.
Who or what inspired you to get into STEM?
I've had managers who encouraged me to explore my interest in how systems worked and gave me the opportunity to develop my skills. My greatest inspiration has been my current manager, who has supported me all the way and encourages and motivates me every day with her knowledge and support.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
Finding solutions to problems, exploring new and better ways to get things done and making them happen with the technology. I also really enjoy supporting our users and providing training for them.
What do you like to do outside work?
I enjoy walking, reading and pampering my cat, Max.
