What is your current Job Title or Role?
Lab technician and OOS coordinator at Becton Dickinson
What advice would you have for young women who are interested in a STEM career or job?
Have a look at all of your options before applying to university. Do what you are good at not what you think you should do!
How did you get to where you are today?
I have a degree in Biological and Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Exeter. I graduated in the middle of the recession and struggled to find a job in Plymouth, so started off in a food microbiology lab in Cornwall. This gave my great transferable skills that helped me to get my current position at BD.
What do you do on a daily basis in your work?
We test medical devices for microbial contamination, for sterility assurance. My job also involves investigating any out of specification results, and updating controlled documents.
Who or what inspired you to get into STEM?
I used to love practical science classes at school. I never considered that this could be career!
What do you enjoy most about your role?
Every day is different, and there is plenty to learn and lots of ways to develop and grow.
What do you like to do outside work?
I love baking, good food and exploring outdoors with my young family.
