What is your current Job Title or Role?
Technical Support / Network Operations Manager
What advice would you have for young women who are interested in a STEM career or job?
If you are already interested, then you are on your way. A career in STEM is fast paced, exciting and extremely fun. Working in technology has provided me with a career where I am constantly learning, challenged and growing. There are so many routes into technology so spend some time finding the right one for you. I work with people from all different career backgrounds, whether it’s a University degree, apprenticeship or self-taught, there’s not one size fits all in tech.
How did you get to where you are today?
I started off my journey going through the University route, I studied Media Studies with IT and Computing. I had no idea what I wanted to do but I loved films and loved computers so chose a degree studying things I loved to do. From University I went into my first graduate job as a CAD designer using the skills I had gained from University. I moved around to a few different jobs within the tech industry before finding the perfect fit working in video technology. I started at Vualto as a webcast engineer and then moved on to technical support. I now manage two teams; Technical Support and the Network Operations Centre.
What do you do on a daily basis in your work?
At Vualto we deliver pioneering technology to enable online video, on a global scale. We are video technology specialists and provide products and services for clients on a global scale, across a range of different industries to include: Broadcasters, Sports, Governments, Media & Entertainment, OTT Service Providers and Telecoms & Operators. My departments provide 24/7 monitoring and support of these systems. We ensure that live streams, services and servers are working efficiently and effectively in order to provide a flawless service for our clients.
Who or what inspired you to get into STEM?
I have always had a keen interest in Technology and the Film Industry which led to me studying Media with IT & Computing. I blame watching Back to the Future when I was a kid and the day my parents brought home our first Amstrad PC. I was very lucky to have supportive parents that encouraged me to do anything I wanted to.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
Every day in my role is different, I never know what to expect on a day to day basis. There is no opportunity to get bored or routined and that keeps it interesting. I love the buzz of working in an ever-changing industry. Every day new technologies are being developed and launched and it is amazing to be a part of that.
What do you like to do outside work?
I love to travel and get away whenever I can to see the world. I am completely obsessed with Lego but just wish I had more room in my house to display it. I am also the co-founder of Babble App – The must-have travel app for women. I started this project in 2017 with my co-founder Lana Dalby and since then I do not have much spare time as every spare minute is spent working on this. A lot of people I know that work in tech spend much of their spare time either on their own tech projects or gaming. I think living and breathing tech goes with the territory. We just can’t get enough of it.
