What is your current Job Title or Role?
Public Engagement Coordinator
What advice would you have for young women who are interested in a STEM career or job?
Do it! STEM is so much fun. You need to be dedicated to get into the role you want but once you are there the rewards are worth it. There are many different avenues into STEM, all of which have different career paths, so do your research and find out what it is that you love. I did this by volunteering a lot before deciding on a career path.
How did you get to where you are today?
After School I went on a gap year most of which was spent underwater volunteering for a coral reef research centre in Fiji. I then got a BSc Marine Biology and Coastal Ecology from Plymouth University. I was then lucky enough to get an internship in Hawaii working for the Pacific Whale Foundation, researching Humpback Whales. From this I discovered my love of Science Communication and realised its importance in conservation. I then gained a MSc Sustainable Environmental Management which focused on Conservation Communication in Zoos and Aquaria. This lead me into my current role at the National Marine Aquarium.
What do you do on a daily basis in your work?
I work in the Discovery and Learning Department at the NMA. My primary role is to lead an innovative and enthusiastic team to connect 300,000 visitors a year with our Oceans. I do this by designing engaging activities that will connect our visitors to our Oceans, this can include talks and shows, holiday themes, outreach activities, beach outreach, boat trips, clubs and many more.
Who or what inspired you to get into STEM?
I have always loved the ocean from a young age. As I grew up I found myself asking more and more questions about it, and quickly found out how amazing it was. I decided I wanted to be a Marine Biologist from the age of 10.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I love working in STEM because new things are being discovered every day. This means we always have something new to talk about and teach.
What do you like to do outside work?
I love to SCUBA dive, even in the cold waters around Plymouth. I also love to travel, even if that is just driving North to see my friends and family.
